Terminal Show 2021Identity DesignVisual Communication Show 2021
Royal College of Art, London2021

	The final showcase for the work produced by the students at the Visual Communication cohort of 2019-2021 culminated in the form a physical show titled as the Terminal which took place at Ugly Duck, 49 Tanner Street, London, SE1 3PL.

“TERMINAL is not where; it’s when. It unpacks the broader questions when brought on. When everything is unmoving, uncertain and unprecedented, how do we change, create, grow? When in isolation energy is a limited resource, what can we afford to create? When art is deemed non-essential, how can sacrifices and compromises inform new values in the work we take into the post-Covid world — what is essential?”
The identity explores the tension between the digital and physical, re-adapting itself based on the deliverable. Inspired by terminal in code and ASCII, it follows a grid and structure. However, this structure is malleable and is re-interpreted. Reflecting on the transient nature of the evolving practices of students who graduate in-between a world of fluctuating restrictions and independence.
As a participant, I had the opportunity to exhibit as well as contribute to the show as member of the Identity Team. It was a collaborative process of working with other team members and curators to develop a language that would represent “Terminal”. The ideation and research was a collaborative process and moving henceforth, I primarily worked on adapting the identity and deliverables for the digital formats.

	This show was a result of a continuous collective collaboration and the following are all the individuals who were integral to this process.

The Walkative Project

Social Media Design
The Walkative Society
Royal College of Art, London2020 - 2021

	Through participant and guest-led walks, written and visual documentation, The Walkative Project explores how walking can trigger processes of thinking, researching, collaborating and making.
As a Designer-in-Residence (2020-2021) in collaboration with Konstantina Benaki, we worked to develop and create visuals for social media and other digital/physical platforms to promote events, workshops and talks.To know more about this project visit @thewalkativeproject. Also, http://thewalkativeproject.org
As a part of this society, I had the opportunity to collaborate with students from the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg through a project called Invisible Borders.

	Through this project, I was able to participate in a collaborative project/group called Walk-and-Error with Anne Carla Elisa , Daniela Graf, Docjong Lee, Theresa Hartmann and Wingshan Wong(Pat). As a group, we explore a walking laboratory through ‘live walking’ as an experimental way of collaborating, testifying, and challenging the invisible boundary while reflecting on walking as the process of making, political discourse, and a measure of collective articulation. Through our previous walks, we have often tested the boundaries of the zoom box as we walk together in two different countries – further speculating on the idea of the digital and data dependant connectivity.

	Kopi ConceptsBrand Identity Design2021

	Kopi Concepts is a design-forward venture focused on creating sustainable, high-quality coffee grinders. With an ethos rooted in functional form, efficiency, sustainability, and minimalism, the brand called for a logo that could reflect these core values while also feeling personal and enduring.

This project was a collaborative journey between the founders and me, as we worked closely to craft a visual identity that authentically represented both the product and the people behind it. The final logo is clean, minimalistic, and structural—drawing inspiration from the founders' personal histories, the functional aesthetics of the product, and the brand’s commitment to sustainability.

	Two final logo iterations were developed for application across
various touchpoints, including product engravings, packaging, and digital platforms. These versions have been consistently used across Kopi Concepts’ branding, including their successful Kickstarter
launch in May 2021.

Royal College of Art, London

	As a polyglot, I often contemplate about the hybridity of language. I believe that spoken language continually evolves with time and culture. For example, non-creole hybrids such as Hinglish (amalgamation of hindi+english), Arabish (amalgamation of hindi+arabic) and Konglish (use of english words in the Korean context) are few amongst many ways in which languages have abstracted themselves.

As a graphic designer, I imagined a solution through type. Typography facilitates language and its communication. It translates language into legible forms. It represents different languages through multiple scripts. It is a tool, a system.

 What if a typeface could visualise and acknowledge this hybridity and abstraction of language? Can typography be used as a tool for to speculate translation?

	Research
	I began my research with two languages which I am fluent in, English and Hindi. I interrogated these languages and its scripts through the devices we use. While smartphones and touch devices offer a range of keyboards with instantaneous response, laptops and desktop devices significantly differ.

While on a ‘English keyboard’ laptop one can activate a keyboard for another language but the basis for the translation is complicated. For example, if one were to type out the word ‘hello’,&nbsp; while using the Hindi keyboard, it’s Devanagari equivalent in hindi, would sound like ‘pattd’. Hence, bearing no phonetic resemblance to its Latin counterpart.

This complicated nature for translation with keyboards, individually clicking through each glyph makes the process of writing in another language using these devices rather tedious.

As a result, I decided to create a typeface which could probably aid this translation or speculate it. I wanted to create a variable typeface which could translate between from its Latin characters to its Devanagari counterpart. To understand more about the nuances of translation I decided to reach other bilinguals (speaking Hindi and English) through a survey.

The Survey

This survey was integral to my research as it helped me to understand my audience and how they translate between the two languages.

<img width="2667" height="1667" width_o="2667" height_o="1667" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b8755015c459fe20d93438009690abd444f61c0d29d73124cfbef80779a66cf9/Export-for-upload-copy15.jpg" data-mid="120505251" border="0" data-icon-mode src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b8755015c459fe20d93438009690abd444f61c0d29d73124cfbef80779a66cf9/Export-for-upload-copy15.jpg" />
The process began with drawing and studying different typefaces to learn about legibility, forms and proportions.

The function of this typeface is to explore, experiment, discover the in-betweens of two languages and forms.

	Workshop
	Endi was designed over the lockdown at the mercy of digital tools and their limitations. The process of translation is non-linear, hence I decided to take an alternative approach for documenting this transition. The participants in this workshop imagined the metamorphosis between the two extreme forms providing a new vocabulary for this visual translation.

	Inbetweenness trouble, begs questions, perplexes. The exploration of inbetweenness has similar ambitions; seeking, through its engagement with things, to reflect on the arbitrariness of seemingly self-evident categories; valuing ambiguity over false certainty. — Paul Basu, The Inbetweenness of Things: Materializing Mediation and Movement between Worlds

	I invite you to explore this in-betweenness with me. Where narratives share contemporaneity. Where the hybridity of language is expressed through form. Where transitory materials dictate the outcome.

On Identity

Moving countries of residence is an exciting yet daunting process. Personally, the imagined ideal of living abroad to living abroad were extremely different experiences. As an individual, who spent most of her life in a country like India, where family units and societal structures and norms hold huge sway over our life and decisions every day, moving into a Western country like the UK where individualism is celebrated and practiced, was a completely new experience and I still believe is a transient process.

The journey of acknowledging this transition was challenging. On some occasions, it was internal turmoil, a series of ineffable emotions. On others, it was discovery of fragments of myself.

I decided to look deeper into this notion of An Identity In-between.&nbsp;

	<img width="2667" height="1667" width_o="2667" height_o="1667" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2b675c88390bbf39953697ada332912102faf2afc195e954f6ca6698f71d6057/Export-for-upload-copy4.jpg" data-mid="120489539" border="0" data-icon-mode src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2b675c88390bbf39953697ada332912102faf2afc195e954f6ca6698f71d6057/Export-for-upload-copy4.jpg" />

I hoped to find familiarity. Cues to identify myself in them.

Conversations with my contemporaries

I asked them about their notions of identity, home, familiarity and in-betweenness.&nbsp;
They spoke about tensions between displacement and belonging, a rather continuous process of unlearning and learning.

On Colour+Film

Colour has been central theme for research and experimentation in my practice. Through this project I wanted to explore the context of colour through the material of analogue film.

I became curious about this material while investigating my grandfather’s photographs. Film embodied the mark made by light and the conditions in which it had aged added to these slides, altered the film in many unexpected ways, strikingly in its colour.

This project began as the lockdown restrictions eased. It was an indulgence into the material world to discover through the processes of making. A relief/ an escape from the zoom classrooms and the digital interfaces. A process to discover the in-betweeness of the interactive processes between colour, light and film.

Reminiscing Bata

Czech Image ExhibitionVitrinka Gallery, London

	As a part of the Czech Image competition,the brief encouraged us to celebrate or represent the Czech Image in the landscape of United Kingdom. As an international student in the country, I challenged myself to research further to find a context which would tie these two countries together.
Soon, I learnt about the history of the shoe company, Bata. Bata was founded in 1894 the town of Zlín (A town in Czech Republic) by Tomáš Bat’a. In India, Bata was also popular onestop shop for footwear. The brand was a common household name and its affordability made it popular across the masses.
On further research I discovered a place called East Tilbury, which was priorly a Bata town. It was established by Tomáš Bat’a, in order to promote his business overseas by establishing a Shoe factory.

	His vision was to create a community for the workforce. Hence around the factory, he constructed a colony of houses, a cinema, a pool and a hall, so that the employees could truly live together as a community.
The town retains elements from its past like the Bata Avenue, The Bata War Memorial and Bata Mews. It was interesting to see how these traces were still left behind. The houses were around the factory, while on the opposite side of the road lie the Village Hall (former cinema hall), the pillar for the war memorial and other public spaces. The architectural design is very modern and still retains the Czech modernist character.

Images from East Tillbury&nbsp;

The factory itself lies hidden behind and is almost inaccessible if one walks through the settlement. It was surprising to see that there were no signages guiding one to reach it.The building represents a strong influence of the modern architecture. A rectangular block with windows spanning through the structure, all equally divided throughout the structure. The structures supporting and extending from the building were all primarily perpendicular or parallel to the building. On top of the building, stands a block with the name “Bata” painted on it in a bright red colour, which was the subject for my poster.&nbsp;

The poster consists of&nbsp;photograph of a fragment of the structure.The composition of the image represents both the re-painted “Bata” which looks almost new along with a section of the building which is worn out and abandoned.

This contrast in the treatment and maintenance of the structure was particularly fascinating. In my opinion, it was symbolic to an act done in order to keep the memory of the space alive and attribute it with respect. But at the same time the rest of the structure suggested an exhausted character which defines the present state of the factory. The colours of the factory with muted reds, while the windows reflected a rather cold blue represent a hint of colours during the Czech modern era.

The poster highlights the essence of this building, which is an important symbol of the Czech culture and influence in the UK.

	Time is linear. It moves foward. It is a vector or even a possible dimension. However, it is difficult to visualise time. We sense its presence but cannot feel or attribute it to a form. There are many devices for measuring time. But what is the form/construction of time? Does time have a story to tell?

Timeline is a tool we often use to map important moments or to create a record/s of an event/s. A line geometrically is a vector, which moves infinitly in linear path in a definite direction.This was an important cue which influenced my visualization of time.
Could a line represent time in its true form? Does time have a voice? How does it in envision itself on earth? What is its trajectory?

	This project led me to embody time and interrogate its form. Through this trajectory, time was discovered through a human voice and its influences were realised in tangible visuals. The process for this project was discovery, attributing a voice(through the perspective of time), visualization and repeating it.

This is a fictional narrative.The process of discovering this narrative was both, linear and dynamic and hence the outcome had to respect this movement and progression that it demanded. This project was a response on a personal trajectory of visualizing the form of time. Thus, as an outcome, the visuals and the abstractions tell the story but also leave room for the audience to imagine their own narrative.
